Big cities like Hamburg increasingly see themselves in competition for the brightest and best. This race to appeal to a new generation of highly-skilled, creative internationals who are mobile but picky about where to live influences decisions on what to build, where, and how. Because if they don’t like your town, smart internationals can up sticks and jet off to Berlin, Barcelona or Bangalore. Or so the reasoning goes.
Who are these people? Do they all use HSBC relocation services and travel first class? Are they as mobile as we think? How long are they going to stay here for? What are the real reasons that they choose to stay in a city like Hamburg?
